A LOOK BACK

In 2004, the Foundation hosted their gala celebration at Playhouse Square.  The theme was “Last of the Living Legends.”  The guests enjoyed a performance by legendary signer Tony Bennett on the stage at the Palace Theatre.  Guests then enjoyed cocktails in the State Theater and dinner on the stage.  The 2004 Hall of Fame inductees were Joe Scaminace of OM Group, Sister Mary Francois Zappone, Anthony DeCarlo, and The Orlando Family.  Our Emcee for the evening was Mike Fratello.  We had a sellout crowd that night with over 900 people in attendance.  The evening was enjoyed by all.

Networking Breakfast

Please join us for the next quarterly NOIA Networking Breakfast. For the last two years, we have successfully brought together NOIA members to share a more in-depth perspective on their business and professional lives. The meetings are well-attended and many of us have made valuable connections as well as gained more insight into the many professions of fellow members. Based on the group’s evolution and feedback from participants, we plan to add a new dimension to the breakfast meetings. Each quarter we will allow a participant the opportunity to discuss, in more detail, the specifics of their business. The presentation will be approximately 10 minutes on a topic that is interesting and pertinent to the group, such as tax law changes, downtown Cleveland development, the health care industry, etc.

In May, our presenter will be Michelle Amato, Vice Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Philanthropy Institute. The Cleveland Clinic is one of the region’s largest employers and most recognizable assets. Michelle will share with the group her role in advancing the Cleveland Clinic and will update us on current developments.
If you are attending for the first time, there will still be an opportunity to discuss the intricacies of your profession. Please come prepared to share with the group what you do, how you do it, and how we can help you grow. As always, we encourage repeat attendance. If you have questions or feedback please feel free to contact me at nicholas.alexander@ubs.com.

A Look Back

Pilla LogoIn 1999, to honor Bishop of Cleveland, Anthony M. Pilla, the Anthony M. Pilla Program in Italian American Studies was established at John Carroll University. The program is unlike any other in the nation. It stands out as the only program of its kind in the U.S. that focuses on an interdisciplinary, undergraduate, liberal arts approach, which emphasizes an understanding of the meaning of family, its heritage, and the role of spirituality in one’s life. Students are able to choose a concentration in Italian Studies in addition to taking courses that carry a Catholic Studies designation. The program examines the achievements of Italian and Italian American intellectual history, culture, literature, philosophy, and religion.

Initial gifts from the Northern Ohio Italian Americans (NOIA) and the Boler Challenge Grant in 1997 made the program possible. Since that time, many alumni and friends of the university have supported our program’s mission through their generosity. The endowment for the Pilla Program now stands at $1.5 million. This program was the first of many significant gifts our Foundation has made to the community. The program is still going strong, and if it was not for a few individuals from our Foundation, the program may not be what it is today.

Celebrating 20 YEARS

One way we can commemorate our 20th Anniversary as is to go back to the roots our Foundation. NOIA was the result of community leaders who joined together to give back, at the time, to assist Bishop Pilla and his desire to renovate the scarcity at St. John’s Cathedral. Since that day, we have been an important source of funding for various cultural, educational and spiritual organizations in the Northern Ohio community.

For this year’s anniversary, we plan to grant a significant gift (mid-high six figures), to commemorate our past two decades of philanthropic leadership. We are calling upon our membership to submit worthwhile projects that are in need of funding for consideration. Please be on the lookout for the formal process in an email in the coming weeks. In addition to traditional organizations that meet the criteria of our giving guidelines, we are seeking projects for which NOIA’s gift could fulfill a majority of the required funding. Projects may include initiatives that would help promote NOIA as an organization and our philanthropic spirit to our community. Please think of needs to submit during the month of March and feel free to contact any member of the Grants Committee with questions.

If you have celebrated the birth of a child, a promotion, or other exciting news please let Angie know so we can share with the membership.

A Look Back

In October of 2000, the Foundation celebrated five years in existence. The event was held at the Renaissance Hotel and the entertainers were Sonny Geraci and the Outsiders. Sonny is known for his smash hit “Precious and Few”. We also had entertainer Pat Cooper “Pasquale Caputo”: Pat got his start in show biz from his good friend Jackie Gleason.

That year, we also honored the following members to our Hall of Fame:

    John Miceli Sr.
    Dr. Victor Fazio
    Father Sam Ciccolini
    Mr. and Mrs. Bellini
    Sam Rutigliano
    Anthony Russo

Michelle Amato, our new Chair for the Grants Committee, spoke about the funding process and how the committee is structured.  We also heard the sounds of one of our grant recipients, Emanuela Fricioni from Tri-C.

Our next speaker was chair of our new committee, Aldo Filippelli; he discussed the importance of the group and our plans for a family picnic in July.  More information will be shared at the spring meeting.

Mark Panzica spoke on a new initiative of the group, focusing on Family Business.  We will be hosting our first social in March.  Stay tuned for more information.

Finally, the Executive Director’s report was presented.

Membership is at 201, to date.  This is only for 6 months.  Last year we were at 197 for the year.

The directories are out.  Please review and contact Angie with any changes.

Meet our Trustees

To our entire under-forty crowd – please join us on Wednesday, February 25th  at the Union Club to hear Trustee Mike Catanzarite speak.  These gatherings have been very successful.  Talk begins at noon.  If you are interested, please let Angie know.

A Look Back

In 1998, the Foundation decided to take a break from the formal Gala’s and chose, instead, to host a picnic on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Retreat Center.  The date was Sunday, June 28, 1998, and there was plenty of food, games and music.  This was also the year that the Foundation became a Charitable Foundation.  The Foundation had set up the giving levels that we still have in place today.  Bishop Pilla was quoted as saying, “The establishment of this Foundation would increase great unity and support of the Italian American Community.”  Today, the Foundation has over 200 members and we are growing.  We will bring back our family picnic this summer.

Wall of Fame

In 2Tony Alexander006, the Wall of Fame was established at what is now the Dorothy and Nicholas Lucarelli piazza at the Alta House.  On Thursday, May 4, 2006, the wall was completed.  It exhibits over 35 past inductees of our Hall of Fame.  Please stop by the exhibit when you are in the neighborhood next.  Our honorees range from Bishop Anthony M. Pilla to Sandra Pianalto.  It is a very impressive list and the community should be proud.

Help us Celebrate our 20th Anniversary

Throughout this year, we will be using this side of our E-news to look back over the years at the fun and successes we have had.

frankie avalon2 3The foundation had its first Gala on Saturday, November 18, 1995 at the Renaissance Hotel. The event was held as a tribute to Bishop Anthony M. Pilla, at the time Bishop of Cleveland, as he was being elected President of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. The event’s proceeds were used to restore the sacristy at St. John’s Cathedral. The evening also featured entertainment from legendary singer Frankie Avalon, one of America’s most popular entertainers, and a teen idol to many. Some of his popular hits were, “Beauty School Drop-out” and “Venus.” It was a wonderful evening and one that will never be forgotten.

NOIA’s Hall of Fame

In 1999, the Foundation decided to start a new tradition at the Galas. Thus, the NOIA Hall of Fame was born and is currently on display at the Piazza at the Alta House in Little Italy. The purpose is to showcase the members of the Italian American Community and the success they have accomplished.
